au alphabet ; sam and dean in (e)ndings
When Sam loses his mind for the last time, he’s in the middle of picking at his salad and Dean is stuffing his face by the TV. Lucifer whispers something awfully sweet into his ear and it’s sick and awful and still sweet. Lucifer tells Sam to very quietly walk outside, says Dean will die otherwise and, now, we wouldn’t want another one of big brother’s deaths under your name. Sam can see it, this dizzy and charred image of Dean hooked and hung, and he leaves the motel, says he’s just gonna go grab some things. Dean grunts in acknowledgement and Sam looks at him for five seconds whole. Just looks and memorizes. He drives for exactly five miles, spends each and every mile memorizing. And, then he parks and when he climbs out, Lucifer guides his hand inside his pocket, curls his fingers around his gun, pulls it out and points. Sam closes his eyes, makes sure Dean is, was, the last thing he saw.
Dean calls him fourteen times and then ten more. No one answers but Dean spends the rest of his life calling. One way or another.
